My Reflection on A Day in the Country 2017 by Janet King

We will work with each other, we will work side by side
We will work with each other, we will work side by side
And we’ll guard each man’s dignity and save each man’s pride
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

This is the second verse of a song that was written by Peter Scholtes in 1968. Perfect timing. I got my first guitar when I was 11, and one of the first songs I learned to play was “We are One in the Spirit.” Probably because it just required an E minor and an A minor chord with the occasional C chord thrown in. This song became embedded in me throughout VBS, camp, Junior Choir, youth group, more camp, more VBS, and so on. Perfect timing. A Day in the Country 2017.

This past weekend, I witnessed the meaning of this song first-hand. This past Saturday, we welcomed thousands of visitors to our Chapel grounds for 2017 A Day in the Country. And while I watched those thousands of visitors enjoying roasted corn, kids’ rides, barbecue, and vendor offerings, I watched our Chapel faithful work side by side. I watched as the body of Christ that comes together every week to pray and praise and lift each other up came together to let others know that we are Christians by our love. We are truly One in the Spirit. Thanks Be To God!
