One Big Happening Family by Sarah Anderson

Imagine you’re talking in front of a room full of people, completely at ease.  You feel no judgement or self-consciousness and you know that everyone listening supports you and loves you.  There is an overwhelming sense of peace.  Sounds like the dream, right?  All humans crave this kind of acceptance and love, yet there are so few places we can find it.  Through many stages of my life, I have found this feeling at Happening, a weekend retreat full of powerful speeches, thoughtful small groups, and so much food it’s almost unbelievable.

I had the chance to attend Happening this past weekend for the first time as an adult.  The majority of “Happeners” are high school age students, with a smattering of college and adult age people, and I was a little nervous I wouldn’t be able to relate.  Yes, my job is working with young people and trying to understand, but often the problems of an adult seem so far away from the problems of a 16-year-old.  I was relieved to find out that, despite the age differences, there was no change in the way we were treated; we were welcomed just as warmly and loved all the same.

Happening is a weekend that truly changes people’s lives.  It is a place where you can express yourself without fear of gossip or laughter, but have your problems and worries greeted with understanding and comfort.  In a world that seems to be so uncaring, having a safe space to unload can do wonders for one’s mental, physical, and spiritual health.  Everyone deserves a community that they feel comfortable in and Happening is a community that welcomes all.

Happening moves to a new church and city with each new retreat, not only to be fair to those who live across the state, but also to experience a new kind of worship space.  The Chapel of the Cross will have the honor to host the next Happening in Spring 2019, at the end of March!  We are happy to open our doors for those seeking to further their relationship with God and are incredibly excited for the role we get to play in the coming Happening.  The minute I stepped into the Chapel community, I felt welcomed and at peace.  I am so happy these next Happeners will get to experience our Chapel family too.  So, if you’ve been feeling a little off lately, or if you are having some problems, or if you just want to see what all the fuss is about, consider signing up for Happening, and, until then, may God hold you in His hands.
